# 0532 :: fortifications & gardens

jaipur, rajasthan, india. october 2005.
krvia : 2nd yr : study trip

"The erstwhile capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs, Amber was the royal seat of power before the shift to Jaipur. Reach the fort by jeep or walk up (but avoid the elephant ride). Within the first courtyard are temples and shops, both of which can be avoided if you don’t have the time. The next court features the Mughal-inspired diwan-i-aam. A three storey gateway lying beyond this court is however more alluring, and leads to the diwan-i-khaas and the sheesh mahal.
With every available square inch covered in minute mirror work, the entire sheesh mahal dazzles with the light of a single match. Move further into the fortress and explore the royal apartments, narrow passages, more courtyards, intricate marble work, chattris and jharokhas.
If time permits, meander your way through the narrow lanes of Old Amber, lying at the base of the hill." - Forts & Palaces of Jaipur, Kunal Bhatia, MMO, May 26, 2007.
