# 2511 :: stone-lintel

mumbai, maharashtra, india. july 2006
krvia : 2nd yr : history of architecture : mumbai's rock-cut architecture

this one is very similar to # 2508

though it's not understood by looking at the photo alone, i checked the adjoining files; and figured that this has to be a stone lintel at the mandapeshwar caves in borivali. the caves were our site for the class study on the rock-cut architecture of the city. the study had been compiled into a book, and is available in the krvia library.

# 0059 : birthday on the beach

mumbai, maharashtra, india. july 2005
juhu beach

this happened at the beginning of second year. we decided to cut richa and jeenal's birthday cake at juhu beach. all 40 of us left college in the 10:15 break, met up at the beach, and played some silly but extremely fun games. by the time we got back, we had bunked a lecture and invited the wrath of a college letter sent to each of our homes. today, this incident seems to have occured years and years ago.

# 0010 : the calm before the storm

mumbai, maharashtra, india. april 2006
andheri station

the foot path along lane that leads to andheri west railway station at 7am. the bits of paper and strands of wire are left behind after the paper-wallahs finish sorting their bundles. two hours later, all the shutters would be up, crowds would be out and this photo would have been blurred.

mumbai, maharashtra, india. june 2005
krvia : 2nd yr : sem iii :: ad : transient landmarks

the bamboo framework and plastic sheets shelter footwear sellers, in this lane outside andheri station. i always thought that the tubelights, light bulbs would also be packed away for the night, but that doesn't seem to be the case. isn't this akin to a site-and-services scheme? another photo from the same street and a bit more description here.

# 0408 : grid house

mumbai, maharashtra, india. october 2005
home

this was the final model being made for the 'grid house' project (krvia : 2nd yr : sem iii). my concept started with the phenomena of energy transfer when a set of arranged carrom-coins are broken. this project was the transition from the abstract / conceptual projects of 2nd yr (transient landmarks and grid house) to the more formal one (community centre in bikaner). it was also the one that the folks at home found the most difficult to relate to. but how can a house form be derived from carrom coins was a question that remained un-explainable for a long time.

# 0008 : chappal-wali gully

mumbai, maharashtra, india. june 2005.
krvia : 2nd yr : sem iii :: ad : transient landmarks

i bought the E7900 in the beginning of semester iii and its first usage was to go around clicking photos for the 'transient landmarks' design project. this one is at the chappal-gully edging the railway tracks, just beyond the andheri west station. all the structures on either side, are transient in terms of their physicality and functioning. a few hours later, once the shops are open and the lane is full of pedestrians and ricks, it's impossible to get a clear view of the street.

# 13431 :: colonising the trees

hercules, california, usa. june 2008
holiday : family

this one was from a BART train while returning back to san francisco, from hercules, across the bay. the towns / mini-cities en route, sprawl all over the hilly country side, seemingly colonising all the forests. the tree cover is still present, though its heavily eaten into; and strangely that makes it look worse. (all the little white spots seen in the background are single family homes)

# 7268 :: in-between

mumbai, maharashtra, india. july 2007
krvia : 4th yr : sem vii : ad site : girgaon

the first project of the fourth year dealt with introducing amenities in the inner cities areas of mumbai. girgaon was one of the sites, and was the one that had the least of the infrastructure, congestion & dilapidation issues. instead it offered a rich social fabric, existing community networks and a comparatively better-off populace; along with a crematorium - cemetery - garden belt that ran along an entire edge, for nearly a kilometer - along which all the ten projects of this precinct were eventually proposed.

# 0532 :: fortifications & gardens

jaipur, rajasthan, india. october 2005.
krvia : 2nd yr : study trip

"The erstwhile capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs, Amber was the royal seat of power before the shift to Jaipur. Reach the fort by jeep or walk up (but avoid the elephant ride). Within the first courtyard are temples and shops, both of which can be avoided if you don’t have the time. The next court features the Mughal-inspired diwan-i-aam. A three storey gateway lying beyond this court is however more alluring, and leads to the diwan-i-khaas and the sheesh mahal.
With every available square inch covered in minute mirror work, the entire sheesh mahal dazzles with the light of a single match. Move further into the fortress and explore the royal apartments, narrow passages, more courtyards, intricate marble work, chattris and jharokhas.
If time permits, meander your way through the narrow lanes of Old Amber, lying at the base of the hill." - Forts & Palaces of Jaipur, Kunal Bhatia, MMO, May 26, 2007.

the retaining wall and contoured part of the design-project site. located in thane, a few hours north of mumbai. we were in the 'site group' and expected to figure out the contours and extents of the site. the extents were manageable, but not having done any practical survey-levelling in the second year, we had to invent our own ways of measuring the contours.

# 9999 :: hampi gateway

hampi, karnataka, india. dec 2007.
krvia 4th yr : jindal steel factory visit.

one of the many gateways that dot the hampi-sites, this one still serves its original purpose: that of serving as a gateway. strangely, a 500 year old gateway has the perfect clearance for a 48-seater bus to pass under it. the crossing of the gate by the bus, was a mini-event in itself; with less than an inch of clearance between the bus-top and the lintel, the helper had to step out to direct the driver, 10 questioning heads popped out from either side, and we held back the traffic for a good 5 minutes...
btw, if your ever planning to visi hampi, then www.hampi.in, managed by a hampi enthusiast from south india, deserves a few clicks.

what this is

hola! this is what i had in mind about this blog: i save the photos that i click with a numbered-file name, ordered serially. it started with 00001 (duh!) and it's somewhere in the 12000s right now. if you're reading this blog, leave a number in the last post's comments (apart from any comments about the post that you may have). from the number(s) in the comments, i'd pick one (as of now, on a random basis) and post the photograph that corresponds to that number. i think it should make an interesting project...
