# 0168 : after the floods

after the july 2005 floods that created havoc across the city. the house, being on the ground floor, had a couple of feet of water; overturned beds, a floating fridge and what not. once the waters receded and the muck was removed, began the rather painful process of getting everything back in order

at girgaon, one of the sites of the 4th yr - semester vii - architectural design project. some textures are a part of the construction - paint, plaster, brick. others are added by the inhabitants - glass windows, metal grills, pvc pipes, wooden railings, tiled roofs, aluminium chajjas. and yet others are natural - moss, creepres and plants - that grow as parasites clinging on to the structure for support and thriving on mositure and nutrition left back by the inhabitants.

such a miscellaneous photo would have never made it to the internet had it not been for this blog. im actually surprised that i have this in my archives - it dates back to the time when i used to keep every photo that my camera clicked. i used to delete what i've clicked, only if there were repeated shots.
this is a friend's second year building-construction sheet on door windows. i probably clicked it, as a reference to draw the rebates, frames and styles! this now seems like eons ago ...

# 0005 : sorting the day's news

the newspaper-delivery guys sort out their bundles, along an entire stretch at andheri station. empty footpaths, and the front porches of shops with their shutters down, allow for ample transient space to do so. within half an hour or so, the bundles are sorted, pamphlets inserted into the copies, and the papers are on their way to being delivered.

le corbusier, the french architect who planned chandigarh, formulated and structured a lot of his concepts, drawings, buildings and details on the theory of "the modular". this is a panel at the chandigarh city museum. click on the pic to view it in detail.

mahalakshmi race course

the expansive grounds of the mahalakshmi race course are amongst south mumbai's largest open spaces. but are also probably the least accessible to the general public. maybe the race course should be moved to the outskirts of the city, and a large central-park like environment be created in its place? it will never happen, but wishful thinking doesn't harm anyone. oh, and i just remembered: the government is actually planning to convert the race course into some sort of acquatic theme park!

ganeshpuri and the more-famous neighbouring town of vajreshwari lies around 80km north of mumbai, and are famous for their hot water springs. ganeshpuri's claim to fame is the serene nityanand mandir, with its aggressive flower sellers. right outside the temple premises is this local market stocking everything from plastic cricket sets to portraits of the famous saint. the lines of orange-yellow-brown polka dots are quite unusual for a small town's market street.

one of the shopping areas that lies between s v road and the andheri west station road. at 7.30 in the morning all these shops had their shutter down. a little later this scene would be very different.
the photo was heavily blurred - hence i photo-shopped the heavy contrast

at the step-well at adalaj. my first experience of this particular architectural typology, that mixes an every-day water-fetching chore with religion and provides facilities for traders enroute. a fabulous play of light and shadow, along with perception of depth and three dimensional vistas makes this quite an enthralling experience. more about this particular step well here

this one is very similar to # 2508

though it's not understood by looking at the photo alone, i checked the adjoining files; and figured that this has to be a stone lintel at the mandapeshwar caves in borivali. the caves were our site for the class study on the rock-cut architecture of the city. the study had been compiled into a book, and is available in the krvia library.

# 0059 : birthday on the beach

juhu beach

this happened at the beginning of second year. we decided to cut richa and jeenal's birthday cake at juhu beach. all 40 of us left college in the 10:15 break, met up at the beach, and played some silly but extremely fun games. by the time we got back, we had bunked a lecture and invited the wrath of a college letter sent to each of our homes. today, this incident seems to have occured years and years ago.
